When NWU student Collin Shepherd arrived in Estonia early this year, he set a lofty goal.

“I wanted to meet the president of Estonia,” said the junior communication major. “Estonia is a small country. How difficult could it be to meet the president?”

Nebraska Wesleyan University junior Laura Blasnitz is pretty sure she won’t cure cancer. But she’s hoping her summer research experience will eventually lead to a career where her contributions are important.

“I don’t expect to cure anything in my lifetime,” said Blasnitz. “I only hope to make some kind of substantial contribution to humanity.”

Douglas Scott, PhD, and member of the Association of Firearm and Toolmark Examiners, will teach a seminar in external ballistics on July 17. Students will learn what bullets do after they leave the barrel of a gun and how they penetrate different media. They will be using ballistic gel, also known tissue simulant, to look at the trajectory of the bullets passing through the gel.

Approximately 3,000 athletes will travel to Lincoln in July to compete in the 2010 National Special Olympics Games.

About 8,000 volunteers will work together to make the national games — one of the largest sporting events of its kind in the world in 2010 — a success.
