Nebraska Wesleyan University’s Panhellenic Council has been recognized nationally for its highest level of excellence in programming and council management.

Panhellenic Council — the governing body of Nebraska Wesleyan’s sororities — was awarded the Division I Sutherland Award by the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values at its recognition banquet, held February 9. The award is designed specifically to assist the council in achieving the highest level of excellence possible in programming and council management.

Panhellenic Council was recognized for outstanding achievement in academics, council management, leadership and educational development, membership recruitment, philanthropy and community service, risk reduction and management, and self-governance and judicial affairs.

“I am very proud of the sorority community and specifically the members of Panhellenic Council in their efforts to enhance Nebraska Wesleyan’s Greek community,” said Erin Morettes, associate director of student involvement and director of Greek life. “Over the past three years Panhellenic Council has worked to raise standards and policies while increasing the value of their programs for sorority women and fraternity men as well as Wesleyan students who are not Greek affiliated.”

The group competed against other Panhellenic Council’s across the country that have two to four sorority chapters on their campuses. Nebraska Wesleyan has three sororities: Alpha Gamma Delta, Delta Zeta and Willard.

“I am excited to see how the leaders of the sorority community will continue to add strong value to each member’s Greek life experience,” said Morettes.

Students who were involved in the policy implementation and award application process include: Nicole Petersen, Gwendolyn Lopez, Anna Jurgens, Rebekah Remus, Brittney Dinkel, Megan Maslonka, Jennifer Heywood, Makala Mejstrik, Katie West, Elizabeth Dowart, Katie Ferrell, and Lea Farho.

In addition to the nation award, Nebraska Wesleyan’s Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council — the governing body of Nebraska Wesleyan’s fraternities — was named to the Gamma Sigma Alpha Honor Roll for the fall and spring 2012 semesters. This honor goes to Greek organizations whose combined grade point average is higher than the all-campus grade point average.
