A new partnership between Nebraska Wesleyan University and York University will help students obtain a master’s degree in athletic training more quickly and efficiently.

The articulation agreement signed on Tuesday will provide York University students a streamlined pathway to advance their careers in athletic training through NWU’s program.

Students will be able complete a bachelor’s and master’s degree in five years. NWU has been an accredited athletic training program since 2004 and will continue as a master’s program starting in the summer of 2025. The Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) requires a Master of Athletic Training (MAT) to be a certified athletic trainer.

“We are extremely excited to partner with York University and create strong relationships between our two institutions,” says Sam Wilson, director of NWU’s athletic training program. “This is a great opportunity to provide students with exceptional experience and future job opportunities.”

“This collaboration represents our commitment to providing top-tier educational opportunities and meeting the needs of today's workforce in time and cost-efficient ways for our students,” says Shannon Leinen, provost at York University. “By combining the strengths and resources of both institutions, we are confident that this program will equip our students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become leaders in the field of athletic training.”

The benefits of this partnership extend beyond academic resources. It will provide cost savings, access to state-of-the-art facilities, hands-on learning opportunities and a network of professional connections.
