Increasing Focus on Decreasing Stress
by Erin Hoffman
College is when students begin navigating life’s challenges with more and more independence—often without family nearby. At Nebraska Wesleyan, students have professors, support staff, coaches and peer assistants to help them along the way. These resource people all seek to provide personal attention and support for students at any turn.
We encourage students to engage in campus life, build connections with peers, and respond constructively to the pressures they may face from academics, athletics, performing arts, jobs or personal concerns.
Each Monday, the Office of Student Life sends email announcements with social and wellness events for students. You can encourage your student to explore those opportunities and resources at NWU—especially in those moments when they may need extra care and support.
Some resources to help students mitigate stress include:
- Yoga Club
This group (@nwuyogaclub) welcomes all students and meets weekly on campus throughout the semester. - Prayer with University Ministries
Students gather at noon on Fridays in Miller Chapel for 30 minutes of inclusive reflection, communion, prayer and spiritual renewal. - Fitness and Intramural Sports
Students improve their health and wellbeing through physical activity, team bonding and friendly competition. Opportunities include open recreation and organized intramural sports. - Counseling Services
NWU Counseling Services offers personal counseling by licensed mental health practitioners. Some common reasons for visiting include depression, anxiety, homesickness, family concerns, stress, relationship concerns, sexuality, eating and body image concerns, trauma, and grief.
