Beginning Saturday (Feb. 26) everyone in the 402 area code will be required to use 10-digit dialing.
The requirement is being implemented to help prepare for the new 531 area code that will be added next month. This change means the 402 area code must be dialed when making any local calls as well as any calls to the 402 area, which includes all of eastern Nebraska.
In addition to dialing the area code plus the telephone number, this change will require you to:
- Update any preprogrammed seven-digit telephone numbers in your land lines and wireless phones to include the 402 area code
- Reprogram all services, automatic dialing equipment and other types of equipment that are programmed to dial a seven-digit number including speed dials, call forwarding settings, fax machines, and voice mail services.
Do not dial a 1 before dialing in the 402 or 531 area code. You will be charged for a long-distance call.
This change will not affect 911 emergency calls. For more information, visit verizonwireless.com.
