Nebraska Wesleyan University’s Music Department will present a pair of comedic operas, “La Canterina” and “Mavra.”

The operas will be performed Friday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 19 at 3 p.m. Both performances will be held in O’Donnell Auditorium, located at 50th Street and Huntington Ave.

La Canterina is a 1766 opera by Franz Joseph Haydn. La Canterina — which means “The Songstress” — follows the story of Gasparina and her two suitors. Both suitors are angered after learning about the other but continue to lavish her with money and diamonds.

Mavra is a 1922 opera by Igor Stravinsky. The opera demonstrates how young love will find a way. For Vassili, reaching Parasha entails disguising himself as a woman and working as a cook in her home. All goes well until Parasha’s mother catches “Mavra” shaving his face.

Tickets will be available at the door. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students.
