Former Congressman Doug Bereuter will deliver Nebraska Wesleyan University’s Curtis Lecture on Public Leadership on Thursday, April 19.
Bereuter’s lecture, “The Future of American Leadership in Asia: The China Context,” begins at 7 p.m. in Olin B Lecture Hall, located one block east of 50th Street and St. Paul Ave.

Bereuter represented Nebraska’s First Congressional District from 1979 to 2004. After leaving the House of Representatives, Bereuter became president and chief executive officer of The Asia Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to peace, prosperity, justice and openness in the Asia-Pacific. He retired from that position in 2011.
Bereuter served in several capacities on the House International Relations Committee, the Asia-Pacific Subcommittee, the Europe Subcommittee, the Human Rights Subcommittee, the Subcommittee on Economic Policy and Trade, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the House Select Committee on Hunger, the House Financial Services Committee, the Subcommittee on International Institutions, the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, the Speaker’s Taskforce to Monitor and Report on the Transition of Hong Kong and the House Delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
He coauthored an amendment granting permanent normal trading relations with China. He has received decorations from the governments of Bulgaria, Lithuania and Romania and received a presidential appointment as a delegate to the United National 42nd General Assembly.
Bereuter was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 2010.
Mildred Curtis established the Senator Carl T. Curtis and Mildred M. Curtis Lecture on Public Leadership in 2005 to honor her late husband and senator, and to explore aspects of public and civic leadership.
The Curtis Lecture features public service leaders such as federal and state officeholders, diplomats and leaders in areas of political science, history, human relations and communication.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
