Two Nebraska Wesleyan University seniors have each been awarded a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad for the fall semester.

Sam Breir of Lincoln will study abroad in Nantes, France while Alexander Delgado of Milford will study in Querétaro, Mexico.

Breir is majoring in French and education with a minor in psychology. He plans to become a French teacher.

“I hope to gain a deeper understanding of French culture and be able to reach my goal of fluency in the French language,” Breir said of his upcoming study abroad experience.

Delgado is majoring in modern language studies with a Spanish emphasis and a minor in sociology/anthropology. He plans to pursue government work that focuses on migration and diplomacy.

“I absolutely love Mexican culture and want to experience it first-hand,” he said of his upcoming study abroad experience. “It’s a culture I grew up with but was never able to go to until now.”

The Gilman Scholarship is a nationally competitive program that assists students with study abroad expenses. The program aims to diversify the students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go. The scholarship is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Breir and Delgado become NWU’s 52ndand 53rdrecipients of the Gilman Scholarship since the program began in 2001.
